Bacterial entrapment within microbiological transport systems prior to inoculation can reduce diagnostic sensitivity. Newer transport designs, such as polyurethane foam–based systems (e.g. MWE Σ-TRANSWAB®), aim to improve cellular release into the liquid phase and enhance flow dynamics. This approach supports compatibility with automated inoculation platforms and molecular techniques, including PCR and MALDI-TOF, by improving organism availability for downstream detection. Compared with conventional swab formats, liquid-based and foam-assisted systems reduce organism retention within the swab matrix, resulting in improved recovery of microorganisms—particularly in mixed flora and infection control contexts such as MRSA surveillance.
