Molecular Detection of Enteric Viruses: Faecal Samples Versus Rectal Swabs

Rapid and sensitive molecular detection of enteric viruses is essential for the diagnosis of gastroenteritis, but conventional faecal sample processing can be time-consuming and require complex preparation steps. This study evaluated the suitability of MWE SIGMA-FECAL TRANSWAB® as an alternative specimen collection system for the molecular detection of enteric viruses. Forty faecal samples previously confirmed positive for rotavirus, norovirus GI/GII, adenovirus, astrovirus, or sapovirus were tested using real-time PCR following collection in SIGMA-FECAL TRANSWAB® and compared with a routine faecal extraction method. The swab-based approach correctly detected the same viral target in 38 of 40 samples, demonstrating a high level of agreement with conventional testing. Internal process controls were successfully detected in all samples, indicating no PCR inhibition. The findings suggest that Fecal Transwab® provides a practical and effective alternative to traditional faecal specimen processing for molecular detection of enteric viruses, offering simplified sample handling while maintaining high diagnostic performance.
