An Investigation Into the Suitability of a Viral Transport Medium and Swab System for the Diagnosis of Urethritis

Eltringham,
2014
MWE SIGMA-VCM®and PurFlock® Swab System demonstrate robust performance for molecular detection of sexually transmitted infection pathogens, supporting stable recovery of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma genitalium DNA using real-time PCR after storage in transport medium for up to 72 hours at room temperature. Across all targets, minimal Ct variation and consistent internal control amplification indicated no significant DNA degradation or assay inhibition, supporting the suitability of the system for reliable specimen transport and delayed molecular testing workflows in urethritis diagnostics.
