Evaluation of SIGMA Molecular Medium For Use In a Routine Diagnostic Virology Laboratory

Accurate molecular detection of viral pathogens depends on the stability of nucleic acid during collection, transport, and storage, particularly as PCR and point-of-care testing become increasingly embedded in routine diagnostics. This study assessed SIGMA-MM™ as a viral transport medium designed to inactivate pathogens while preserving nucleic acid integrity across multiple clinical sample types, including respiratory and non-respiratory swabs. Clinical specimens spiked with viral targets were stored at room temperature for extended periods and analysed using multiple PCR platforms and extraction workflows, including direct-to-assay systems.
