Amnicator® is a rapid and simple method for detecting ruptured amniotic membranes.

Prematurely ruptured amniotic membranes present a considerable risk to the unborn child, and require immediate medical attention. It is often possible for the condition to be misdiagnosed due to the presence of other fluids in the vagina. Normal vaginal fluid has a low pH and can be distinguished from amniotic fluid which has a neutral pH. Amnicator® is a sterile swab with a bud impregnated with the indicator nitrazine yellow. The indicator will stay yellow when wetted with liquid with pH less than 6.5, and turn blue if the liquid has a higher pH. The test takes seconds and will give quick assurance to the mother in many cases, or show that further clinical investigation is required.
