Description: The screw cap vial is compatible with most automatic decapping systems, and features “ swab capture”. Caps are colour coded according to format and application. The vial is made of shatterproof polypropylene, is self-standing, and has an inner conical base and is ideal for centrifugation.
The transport medium is a liquid Amies suited to both automated and conventional processing. The medium provides a suspension for quick Gram-stain, and multiple cultures. In automated systems an aliquot can be taken by pipette or sampling nozzle ready for sub-culture or direct plating according to application. Rapid elution of the specimen allows accurate and quantitative dilutions. The liquid Amies maintains viability of aerobes, anaerobes and fastidious bacteria for up to 48 hours at ambiemt and refrigerated temperatures (as required for compliance with CLSI M40-A).
The Sigma-swab® has a soft polyurethane foam bud, which is not only more comfortable for patients, but has properties which enhance performance. The foam is highly absorbent for improved sample uptake, and has an open cell structure which allows complete flow through of medium and reagents, with maximum release of microrganisms into the liquid phase, ensuring optimum sensitivity for subsequent test procedures. The swab shaft has a convenient breakpoint for easy handling, and accurate fit of the swab into the vial for swab capture.
Swab capture: When the swab is broken into the vial, and the cap tightened, the swab self-centres into the cap, and is captured by the central holding aperture. When the cap is next removed, the swab is now fixed to the cap and is automatically removed at the same time. This means automatic sampling devices cannot be impeded by any swab fragments.
Method of use: The specimen is collected from patient by rubbing the swab against the wound, lesion, or other body site being investigated. Keeping the vial upright, unscrew cap. The swab is then inserted into the vial, with the bud being immersed in the liquid medium. Holding the vial with one hand, use the other hand to gently but firmly bend the swab shaft against the vial until it breaks. Discard the non-swab segment as clinical waste. Replace cap on vial, screwing until fully tightened. After recording the patients details on the printed label, the Sigma-Transwab® vial is despatched to the laboratory.
Features: Self standing vial with conical base and screw cap with integral swab-capture mechanism, Liquid Amies medium for automated and conventional processing, Sigma-Swab® with open-cell foam bud for optimum absorption and release of microorganisms, convenient breakpoint shaft. Shaft and bud are inert, non-toxic, and non-inhibitory for fastidious organisms with no false Gram staining, 2 year shelf-life
